CCSF 2012 Day 8: Oasis

Created by Liam and Moe for C3/DS (Metaroom)

For those Norns, Grendels, and Ettins who live underwater, a brand new area is just waiting to be explored! Oasis is a circular metaroom complete with a small beach and aquatic area teeming with life! Not only are there new sharks, fish, and coral to discover, but the metaroom also includes several new toys. It's a perfect place for Creatures of all ages to enjoy the water! See if you can find some of the new items in Oasis, such as:

Beach Ball
Inner Tube
Shark
Submarine Toy

From Moe: "Oasis was originally a test-bed for my early coding experiments, specifically with aquatic life (swimming agents, ecosystems, etc). It's over 5 years old and frankly was never meant to be released, except that Liam thought it was pretty and releasable. I agreed with him and figured someone else might enjoy it (if only for the looks, yes). It's a "might as well" release. It was NOT designed for Creatures to live in: It was designed for my own personal testing. It was also not particularly polished (it was just a test-bed, after all). It was not meant to be a well-thought-out room. Just something pretty to play with that I decided to share."

I have a few words to say about this place over at my blog, and unfortunately I can't say I really like this metaroom apart from its appearance.

To sum up what I said on my blog here: It's pretty, but it has major design flaws.

Well it might help put the room into perspective if I explain it's origins... It was originally a test-bed for my early coding experiments, specifically with aquatic life (swimming agents, ecosystems, etc). It's over 5 years old and frankly was never meant to be released, except that Liam thought it was pretty and releasable. I agreed with him and figured someone else might enjoy it (if only for the looks, yes). It's a "might as well" release. It was NOT designed for creatures to live in--it was designed for my own personal testing. It was also not particularly polished (it was just a testbed, after-all). You may review it as you feel, but bear in mind that it was not meant to be a well-thought-out room. Just something pretty to play with that I decided to share. :p

This ^.

I'll add in some Creature-interactive stuffs when I had time today. Grendel Man, all you had to do was send me a PM and I'd be happy to make what changes I can. :P You're starting to make a habit of this ranty-blog stuff. ;)

Grendel Man: It's one thing to offer constructive criticism or try to help improve a CCSF release with some ideas. It's quite another to say that there are so many things wrong with something, and to point out every which way something is flawed. The whole point of the CCSF is for people to participate together, and bring together a form of community spirit. Less experienced developers could easily be turned away from submitting anything if they see what sort of response they could get. If you really feel that there are major design flaws, it seems more prudent to directly contact the creators. Please make sure to think how your actions and words may affect others. Thanks.

Moe: Thank you for posting that information! I'm going to be updating the main post to reflect these origins. I wasn't aware of its use as a test bed, and I think this will certainly put it in more perspective. It's definitely pretty, and I sometimes enjoy having a place just to play around with aquatic life! Perhaps it will have an updated form at one point, but I really appreciate you and Liam sending this in!

Well, in Grendel Man's defense, he has ever right to review a room and keep his own opinion of it, even to voice it publicly. I'm sure if he had known the background of the room he would have been less critical or taken a different approach. :) Some of his points are valid and the room is currently largely unlivable; we will endeavor to address some of the issues in a later release. For now, enjoy the pretty and my early coding. lol

It's very adorable! It looks like a tiny world in a bubble. ^_^ Thanks so much for sharing. I might see if I can breed fishies in here. :D

I'm definitely going to take some time today to make the room a bit more liveable for norns! And if I get my way, add a new aquatic plant too... :) Stay tuned for updates!

This is so beautiful! It's really nice to see an aquatic room that consists of "a smaller pool of water", so the water doesn't appear cyan but crystal clear instead. That it's space showing through in the background makes it even cooler. This along with the green plants and macro-algae looks great with the yellow rocks too! Love the water movement too, that detail adds makes all feel alive.
Oh, the floating toys are all fun to "harass" too XD

Not tried putting creatures in it but it sounds like it may not be super-suited for creatures? I personally don't care much about that, I often just keep rooms just for their looks and ecology. I find the unusual platforms really neat, it looks different and allows biota to act and move in other ways then they would in most rooms :)

Meant to add that the globe shape of the room is really unique... a bauble in space :)

It's pretty ^_^ I chucked some aquanorns in it, along with some food and toys and it seems pretty inhabitable to me o.O All it really needs is a lift system from the water back to the surface. Hope to see more soon!
